"True Confessions"

(1981)

Director: Ulu Grosbard

Director of Photography: Owen Roizman

A forgotten slow-burn 70s style drama released by United Artists following the debacle of Cimino's "Heaven's Gate" and likely dumped and ignored. Directed by Ulu Grosbard (Straight Time) and starring two giants of cinema - Robert De Niro and Robert Duvall - the film follows two brothers, one a priest, the other a cop, both having a crisis of conscience following the brutal murder of a prostitute (echoes of Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia). With great supporting turns from Charles Durning, Kenneth McMillan, Ed Flanders, Burgess Meredith, and Rose Gregorio, solid cinematography and directing, and a great script with strong characters, the film is definitely worth rediscovering.
